Churches in Altes Land
10 churches are spread in Altes Land
The 10 churches in Altes Land form the centre point of their
villages. Some of the churches (Borstel, Twielenfleth) were
reconstructed on a new place after a bursting of a dyke. These
churches tell a more than 800-year-old story of Christian faith in
The church towers were built next to the churches, because the ground would not be able to support the weight of the towers. This is clearly shown by the churches, reconstructed after the Thirty Year’s War. The naves’ brickworks are held together by beams, because the nave would break apart otherwise.
What makes churches in Altes Land especially precious are their organs, and in some cases, their history dates back to more than 500 years. Arp Schnitger (1648-1719), one of the most famous organ builders of Northern Germany, worked with eight of the organs.
