From the middle of April until the middle of May, first the cherry blossom and then the apple blossom turns the Altes Land into a sea of pink and white.

Imagine that it's springtime, the sun is shining, the air is sweet and there is a soft warm breeze blowing gently from the Elbe. You are walking through on orchard and are surrounded by delicate looking fruit trees. The trees are covered with a multitude of blossoms, you feel as though you are floating on a cloud of pink. At the end of the garden you see a fairy tale house in which the rooms are warm and friendly and where you may quench your thirst and cater for your hunger. But this is not a Grimm's fairy tale - welcome to the Altes Land.
Just a short distance from Hamburg, lying on the banks of the Elbe between Stade and Buxtehude, the Altes Land is a natural paradise and is the largest fruit growing area in Europe.
But it is not only to be visited during blossom time, as beautiful as it is, in summer too the area is perfect for all sorts of outside activities such as cycling, walking tours and swimming. In autumn it is fruit picking time and it's worthwhile paying a visit to the many fruit farms to watch the farmers at work. In Winter too a brisk walk along the elbe, in a fresh northwind, will bring colour to your cheeks and give you a spring in your step.
